January 2010

As an ingredient of online business success, it crucial to decide on the advertising mix that you are going to use. Yet the problem that is faced in online business is that the online business advertising media is not known.

Let us look at it from a different angle. In the offline business world, people who work in Marketing or advertising fields, usually have university degrees in those fields. Meaning, they have got years of training before entering the field, and then they will need to get experience and make achievements before they can move on with their careers.

This is not the case in the online business world. The majority of people who venture into online business are establishing businesses whether with their own products/services or as affiliates without having the slightest idea about how to market online.

Accordingly, the advertising tools will be totally unknown. Thus it will be impossible to decide on the online advertising mix.

Therefore, for any person who wants to venture into online business needs to learn all the different tools available for online advertising. Then each tool should be studied to know how to use these tools effectively. Although there are numerous books and e-books written on the subject, they are lost in a pile of scam e-books that basically give no information whatsoever about the subject.

Only the lucky ones are able to find a program that walks them one step at a time in the world of online advertising either by finding a real e-book or by affiliating with a program that actually gives such a detailed training and not only a bunch of tools and unorganized material.

After knowing all the tools available, how to use them and costs associated with each of those tools, a person would be able to decide on the suitable online advertising mix.

Although the factors affecting the decision to choose the suitable online advertising mix are the same as those affecting the choice of a suitable offline advertising mix, the priority of those factors would differ between the two marketplaces.

The factors are:

1-Type of business
2-Target market/segment
3-Budget availability
4-Skills
5-Availability of resources including time

The priority of these factors when deciding on an offline advertising mix would look like this:

1-Type of business
2-Target market/segment
3-Budget availability
4-Resources and skills are at the same level.

The priority of these factors when deciding on an online advertising mix would look like this:

1-Budget availability
2-Resources, especially time
3-Skills
4-Target market/segment
5-Type of business

Many internet marketers might find the details of this article debatable but they would all agree on the steps advised which are briefly as follows:

1-Get to know all the advertising tools available for online advertising
2-Know the ins and outs of each tool
3-Try the ones that you are able to afford and test their effectiveness
4-Depending on your situation decide on the online advertising mix that you are going to use.

It is important to note here that for the offline business world consider the internet as one advertising tool to use; similarly the online business world consider offline advertising as one of the tools that can be used to advertise online businesses.

It should be very clear that deciding on the online advertising mix does not guarantee success for the mere factor that the mix itself is not engraved in stone and it could be changed depending on the changes that could occur on the above mentioned factors. Deciding on the online advertising mix is the beginning of the online business journey.

People from aboveIt’s no secret that the current economic slump affects us all. Still, some of your competitors are doing a lot better than you. Could it be that they’re doing something that you’re not? (Like business marketing Online, perhaps?)

The most effective business marketing today takes place Online where most consumers are doing either their shopping or their research.

How are you marketing your business on the Internet? Do you have a well-ranking Website? Is your business popular on search engines, in digital media, on social networks and with news agencies? Are you getting customers Online? What’s your excuse?! No time, too complicated, too costly?…

No matter what business you’re in, the solutions are out there. There are companies that handle every aspect of marketing; that can handle any one of them; or all of them; or design a custom marketing strategy especially for your business and implement it, gradually in a way that’s feasible for your budget. And yes, they do all the things you wish you could but either don’t have the knowledge or the time to do.

Business brand that can be developed in stages: Business brand is important for any business not just for such giants as Shell and Macy’s.

Every single piece of your marketing material from business cards, invoices and advertisements to your Website and more should feature your logo and slogan and prominently so! You have those materials and use them anyway: why waste money on NOT getting all the bang for your buck? Get a business brand!

Business Website design from A to Z which may even include Website management with the guarantee that your Website will rank well on major search engines. (Chances are you have a Website already, how is it doing? Is it generating business for you? Can it be found on Yahoo or Google when you search for it WITHOUT the use of your business name? No? And who is managing your Website right now?)

Business public relations: What the heck is it? It is “only” the image of your business; not what you do, not what it is, but how it appears to consumers.

Business image is an extremely important ingredient of success. Let’s face it: there are many businesses just like yours in your area. Why should people want do business with you as opposed to doing business with Joe? How are you different? How are you better? For what should you / your business be known or liked? Addressing those questions professionally is the job of business public relations.

Professional reputation management that consists of monitoring, management and even damage control. (Yes, there are companies that can do that without relying on the court system.) Bad reputation or even lack of sensitivity to your business’ reputation can damage it, or even destroy it.

Do you have a plan in place? Do you know how many venues Online provide consumers with the opportunity to express their opinion about your work? Are you on top of things and managing the chatter?…..  Are you ignoring it? Can you afford to ignore it? Be careful it may come back to haunt you! Look into professional reputation management!
Business publicity for minimalists or full blast.

Have you ever wished that someone would write an article about your business? That the whole world would read it? There is an excellent chance that New York Times won’t come a knocking, but yes, there could – and should! – be articles about your business circulating Online. Good, informative articles may be even picked up and syndicated by Websites that will generate followers and customers for you.

Similarly with press releases which spread the word about news and events relating to your business. Both could potentially be read by millions of people. Either one could become your competitive edge, not to mention a claim to fame. Should you look into business publicity? In a word: YES!

Finally, business marketing Online that generates customers and sales. Most of the marketing approaches described above boil down to visibility and distinction, business marketing Online creates and sustains active presence and participation of your business on search engines, in digital media, in social networks, and more.

The most significant dialog between business and consumers takes place on the Internet, today. If you didn’t claim a chunk of it for your business’ marketing Online and are still gambling on print advertising or direct mail, you’re missing all the prospective customers who are searching for the services / products you provide as we speak: Online. Blaming the economy?

Blame is passive; try being pro-active: reevaluate your marketing. It may well be outdated.

1. Update the pages on your website frequently. Stagnant sites are dropped by some search engines. You can even put a date counter on the page to show when it was last updated.

2. Offer additional value on your website. For affiliates and partners you can place links to their sites and products and ask them to do the same for you. You can also advertise their books or videos, if these products relate to your industry and are not in competition with your own product.

3. You can allow customers to ‘opt in’ to get discounts and special offers. Place a link on your site to invite customers to ‘opt in’ to get a monthly newsletter or valuable coupons.

4. Add a link to your primary page with a script ‘Book Mark or Add this site to your Favorites’.

5. Add a link ‘Recommend this site to a Friend’ so that the visitor can email your website link, with a prewritten title, “Thought you might be interested in this”, just by clicking on it.

6. Brand your website so that visitors always know they are on your site. Use consistent colors, logos and slogans and always provide a ‘Contact Us’ link on each page.

7. Create a ‘Our Policies’ page that clearly defines your philosophy and principles in dealing with your customers. Also post your privacy policy as well so that clients know they are secure when they visit your site.

8. Create a FAQ page which addresses most of the doubts and clarifications about your product or your company that are likely to be asked. This helps to resolve most of the customers doubts in their first visit to your site.

8. Ensure that each page on your website has appropriate titles and keywords so that your customer can find their way back to your site if they lose the book mark.

9. Never spam a client, who has opted for newsletters, with unsolicited emails. Later if they decide they want to ‘opt out’ of the mailings, be sure you honor their request and take them off the mailing list. They may still come back if they like your products. But they will certainly not come back if you continue to flood their email box with mails they no longer wish to receive.

In the world of 21st century, it is no longer surprising to find that most business had already establishes a web presence to support their brick-and-mortar businesses.

There are manyadvantages of establishing a web presence on the Internet such as selling globally to prospective customers and disseminating information to the public.

Most business owner would have already understood the importance of a web presence to their business. What most of them had failed to understand is that the domain name in their website can contribute significantly to their online marketing strategy.

First, we look at a few rules of a good domain name. Most would agree that a good domain name should:

1) be able to describe your business when people first look it.

2) include hyphen in between the words to make it easier to read.

3) have an appropriate .com, .net, .biz, .info, .org to reflect the nature of the business.

What I differ in opinion is that a long domain name “mysuperduperbrandflyingsite.com” can be as effective as a short domain name “superduper.com” depending on the context where the domain name is used. Many people would definitely disagree with me on this point as they believe that a short domain name is easier to remember. However, a long domain name can be just as effective depending on the context where it is use.

Having a catchy long domain name such as http://www.dont-miss-a-thing.com or http://www.once-in-a-lifetime.com/ would definitely helps to draw attention to your business promotion rather than promoting your website name http://www.yourcompanyname.com which is mundane.

When people reach http://www.dont-miss-a-thing.com or http://www.once-in-a-lifetime.com, you can communicate a short sales message before driving them to the appropriate web page.

Thus, depending on the context where the domain name is used, a domain name can actually help to make or break your overall marketing performance.

Business entrepreneurs that advertise online know that a well thought-out creative advertising campaign has been, and is, the groundwork to make money online and the foundation stone of many internet fortunes

Casual advertising is a waste of money and effort.

Some business entrepreneurs know how to advertise online so as to get the full worth of their money; others spend more money but get no apparent returns.

Increasing the online advertising budget for a home based internet business doesn’t necessarily increase the change to make money online.

How to advertise, what to advertise and when to advertise; these are the three questions that present themselves to the internet entrepreneur, which, if answered correctly, will bring him undoubted success.

There are many ways of implementing successful creative advertising strategies and the novice in the business finds himself perplexed as to which to adopt. But let him consult anyone who has made a fortune through advertising, and in 99 out of 100 cases he will learn that the medium of success was the advertising method, be it online or offline; using the internet, the printed media or the air waves.

In marketing not only the applicable advertising strategy, but also the approach is very important, it has to be done fearlessly.

It is a useless technique to go into a crowd and raise a weak scream which is drowned in the general clamor. It will not help either trying to imitate the approach of ancient times market vendors who in crying fish for the first time would not lift their voices for fear any one should hear them. Fear is not a good conductor to make money online for any kind of business.

There is another sense in which every online advertising entrepreneur should be brave. He should have confidence in promotion, should be quite certain that if he throws his bread upon the waters he must find it, even if it be “after many days”.

It is the half-hearted people who fail. You cannot break the bank in a casino by risking half-crowns on “red” or “black”. These timid people are the victims of advertising adventurers, people who start papers specially to meet their case. They are known not to be able to resist the bait of a cheap advertisement, and will give a typical order for “100,000 guaranteed visitors to your site for 99 cents” with vast satisfaction, thinking they have driven a hard bargain. So they have for themselves.

Low price advertising campaigns normally mean limited traffic and exposure; and that in its turn implies that an advertiser in search of publicity might as well publish his advertisement up on thin air. A good keyword at 4 dollars a click in a Google campaign is a better speculation than 100,000 guaranteed visitors for 99 cents.

A creative advertising strategy has to attract and maintain attention. Anyone of a thousand online ads may serve to catch the eye and fix the attention for an instant, but only the creative advertisements are the ones read, marvel about and remembered, and when the reader wants any particular item or service he surfs to the place where it is advertised to be on sale and clicks.

The time to carry out online advertising is all the time: an advertisement is never idle; it is sending traffic, potential costumers to your online business while you are asleep, or while you are away on a vacation.

The best time to launch a creative advertising campaign is when your home based internet business is getting a little dull, when customers are few and hard to please. Than it is time to stir up business and force it to come your way.

Business entrepreneurs who no longer advertise online because business is dull are like the man who neglects to mend a leaky roof in dry weather because it doesn’t leak then..He better ought to make money online in all kinds of weather.

I’ll tell you a secret that you can use within ten minutes that could substantially benefit your business. And it’s strange because, unless you happen to live within ten minutes of me, there’s no way you can compete with me or steal this almost zero cost, local traffic (and if you do live nearby, stay off my turf or I’ll break your legs). You can however do exactly the same in your local area without fear of me coming round your place with hired goons and a baseball bat.

Recently, I’ve been getting my house renovated (if ever you wish to go grey with alarming speed, this is the way to do it). It means I’ve had to go to a very popular hardware store near my house countless times. This hardware store gets tens of thousands of customers every week. That’s what I like to call offline traffic (there’s loads of it about and pretty soon, you’re going to learn how to harvest it).

A while ago I noticed that this hardware store had an advertising podium on a very prolific spot near the tills. I had seen loads of people buzzing around it before, checking out the various advertisers displayed. It costs £20 to place an ad there for a whole week.

Did I place an advert? Most certainly – but I put it with a very specific SPIN. You see, you have a lot of builders, plumbers, decorators (etc) visiting this store frequently. This is a group that is always looking for new business. A group that is not particularly tech-savvy. A group that are increasingly looking to set-up a web presence. In short, a group that would benefit greatly from my site design & promotion services.

As you might imagine, I placed the ad for website design services targeted to this group. The response? Far more than my design team (currently one person) could handle. And a bunch of leads pestering me to let them know the minute I had availability to service their order. Now I don’t know about you, but that’s the kind of result I like from twenty bucks of advertising.

Now this method is one very small strategy you can employ to get big gains for your online business using offline advertising. I could literally think up HUNDREDS of variances to this theme. You see, many physical stores that get tonnes of customers offer these advert spaces and you can benefit from them in a pretty big way:

- Place an advert in the popular health store and drive traffic to your highly related health food website. Immediately you have targeted traffic that will click away at your Adsense displays, affiliate links & purchase your health eBooks.

- Put an advert around local gyms and get traffic to your fitness website with the same results.

- Place your “make m.oney” type adverts around smaller newsagents (one ad I place costs me £2 [about $4] a month) and watch the steady flow of traffic come in.

You get the idea. And this is just ONE offline strategy. There are countless other ways to drive traffic & sales to your online business. Here are a few additional ones for you to consider:

- Classified adverts placed in local papers & magazines.

- Radio & TV ads – contrary to popular belief, there are affordable radio & tv adverts available to suit your product.

- Flyers – very inexpensive to get out, yet can be incredibly responsive depending on the type of niche you’re in.

- Coupons – issue coupons that can be redeemed at your site

And believe it or not there are even more. Hopefully, this article has taught you that just because you have an online business doesn’t mean you should turn your back to offline advertising. In fact, these rather ignored strategies can account for the bulk of your traffic, subscribers and customers once you put them into place.
